My grandfather sledding in Clifton Forge circa 1940's
Story from my dad about his dad. If anyone has visited Clifton Forge, you know the main street in town is in the "valley" portion of the town and then most of the residential streets break off and go right up the mountains surrounding the town. One of the longest is Jefferson Street, and it terminates right at the foot of City Hall. There are 3 "tiers" that make it one long hill that rivals what you might find in San Francisco.
Anyway, nobody was ever brave enough to do the entire hill, however my grandfather was know for his "Dutch Courage", and grabbed one of the Radio Flyer sleds one snowy day and headed down Jefferson hell bent for leather. He hit all 3 dips and had to be going +30 mph, the road flattens out at the bottom for about 200 yards, glided all the way down, crosses Main Street and runs right up into the Town Hall front door and into the lobby! Needless to say the receptionist was not very happy with his recklessness, but he got up, brushed himself off and headed back up the hill to the cheers of most of the children of the town.
